10 years in Indiana’s foster care system

Rimy aged out of care in January 2019 and has fiercely pursued a career in foster care advocacy.  Rimy is a student at Purdue University Northwest where she majors in Communication. Rimy’s passion for foster care advocacy stems not only from her own lived experience, but the experiences of her 10 siblings.  Rimy promotes shared power and authentic youth engagement in all spaces involving young people with lived experience in foster care.

Rimy is an active alumni leader in Indiana’s Youth Advisory Board. She grew her advocacy and leadership skills as a FosterClub All-Star in 2019 and continues advocacy work with them today. In 2020, Rimy participated as a panelist in a virtual Congressional Briefing, informing Congressional members and staff on the impact of COVID-19 on current and former foster youth. Rimy uses her lived experience to consult others on a local and national level. Rimy is a  LEx Leader at Foster Club, a Constituent Consultant at Casey Family Programs, a Consultant for the Policy Improvement Center, and a Youth-Adult Consultant at Center for the States. In 2021, Rimy was the Keynote speaker at the Indiana Family YES conference and spoke about her lived experience in foster care and the impacts of being system involved. In 2022, Rimy expanded her national footprint and was a guest on the Soulful Liberation podcast, hosted by  Ángela Quijada-Banks, works in partnership with Think of Us on national strategy recommendations for the US Childrens’ Bureau. Rimy has also trained and shared her lived experience at conferences in Maryland and South Carolina. Rimy’s area of expertise include topics surrounding issues of racial justice, equity, and inclusion, strategic sharing, and using her lived experience in foster care to empower and inform others.

Rimy has recently published her first book: Foster Parents: Caring and Color and plans to continue to use her lived experience to inspire her writing and share her knowledge with others.. In her spare time, she spends time with family and focuses on her many art and expression projects.
