Halimah Powell, 24, South Carolina’s Foster Care System
Halimah entered foster care at 13 and was emancipated at 21. Now at age 24, she is married and a mother. While in foster care she never had much stability. She’s experienced thirteen different foster homes. Only one of her foster homes helped prepare her for adulthood. Although she felt neglected by the system itself, she is thankful she received college funding help.
Enrolled in college, she is a leader whose focus is on making the world a better place. Halimah volunteers by giving food, smiles, and moral support to the less fortunate in her community. She also volunteers to help the elderly as a private duty home health aide.
“We cannot change the world as a whole, however, we can make an attempt to accomplish it in segments.”
