Genesis Duarte-Vazquez, age 21, California’s Child Welfare system.

 

Genesis entered the foster care system at the age of 9 years old, having been in 3 different foster homes after entering care. She recently aged out of the foster care system, at the age of 21. 

 

Genesis is currently attending South Dakota State University. On-campus, she is a part of many organizations. Such as being apart of the greek life - Chi Omega, Spanish club - working with other students to start a group called LASA (Latin American Student Association), College Democrats, and is apart of a group for women with foster care experience. 

 

In her spare time, Genesis likes to listen to an eclectic playlist of music, reading poetry, and support in community projects with her sorority. One day she hopes to write a book of her experience in care, capturing the resilience of her story to inspire others that they can to become successful. 

 

While attending South Dakota State she hopes to attain a Political Science and Spanish BA. Then take a year off to prepare for law school. With all her degrees she plans to combine it with her passion for supporting young people in foster care and become a children’s defense attorney.
