Elbert Wilson, age 29, Kentucky’s Foster Care System

Elbert was born into Kentucky’s foster care system where he spent 21 years in state care. He grew up with the polished truth that his mother battled with addiction and was unable to take care of him or his siblings. Throughout his childhood of being moved from different homes throughout the state, he was fortunate to remain with all his siblings. At the age of 12, he was adopted and after four years of an unfortunate and abusive adoption; he was placed back into care. Entering Neccos Independent living program at 19, Elbert received his G.E.D and began taking college courses at Bluegrass Community and Technical College. Elbert plans on continuing his education and majoring in social work. Elbert formerly served on both Kentucky Youth Leadership Council and Kentucky Foster Care Council as an advocate and voice for foster youth. He also was 2012 FosterClub All-Star educating, connecting and inspiring foster youth and child welfare stakeholders across the county. Elbert is a marathon runner, writer and... Foster Kid.

"It was when I stopped searching for home within others and lifted the foundations of home within myself I found there were no roots more intimate than those between a mind and body that have decided to be whole." Rupi Kaur
