Carrie Janis spent 5 years in care
Carrie is an enrolled member of the Standing Rock Sioux tribe. In her late teens, Carrie moved with her mother to Denver where she was placed in foster care shortly after arriving. She has experienced different placements including treatment facilities. Currently, Carrie participates in the Third Way Program; she serves as a Youth Representative for the Denver Indian Family Resource Center for the Pathways to Success. Carrie is passionate about the issues that affect Native American youth today including intergenerational abuse, suicide, psychotropic medications and cultural connections. Advocating with the Denver Indian Family Resource Center has provided her the confidence to expand her advocacy and represent her family, community, and the Native youth who are fighting to maintain their culture in foster care.
