Sebastian Skinner spent 3 years in Michigan's foster care system.

Due to his family's struggles with drugs and alcohol and exposure to trauma, Sebastian Skinner was placed in foster care at the age of 15. Although separated from his family, Sebastian’s foster care experience was very positive and beneficial, providing him with a sense of security, stability, and love. Experiencing only two placements, Sebastian was able to remain in the same school district and graduate from high school on time. Although he has aged out of the foster-care system, Sebastian still has the support of his foster family and finally feels like he is experiencing a “normal” life. He is proof productive, gifted members of society can come from any socioeconomic class if provided basic supports and opportunities.
A self-described “huge history nerd,” Sebastian was thrilled to visit Washington, D.C. - one of his top travel destinations - as a member of the 2016 Congressional Foster Youth Shadow Program where he shared his experiences with his Congressional member..Currently, Sebastian is a sophomore at Michigan State University pursuing a major in History Education. His future plans include obtaining a Master’s in Education focusing on history, social studies and geography, becoming a teacher and coach at his old high school, and starting a family.
