Kevin West was in and out of the foster care system from the time he was born until 18, when he transitioned from care. “I lived in 5 foster homes, 2 group homes, spent time in shelters, juvenile hall, and mental health facilities until I left my last group home on my 18th birthday.” Kevin has demonstrated courage and resolve all his life, especially when advocating for himself in care as a transgender individual. He has now turned that self- advocacy into speaking and helping others. “I was a speaker for a group called Triangle Speakers, an educational panel that goes to schools, churches, jails, and other community organizations and educates about lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people by putting a human face to the issues…” He also currently acts as a mentor for a youth currently in care. In addition to using his voice for advocacy, Kevin also uses his voice to sing karaoke, even participating in local karaoke contests. He also enjoys bonfire, reading, and can be found on occasion playing some video games.
