Overcoming

I have been told me multiple times that I would not be able to study abroad or do Independent Living while in my dorm at school. This really limited my options because at the time studying outside of the United States was one of my biggest goals. I also wanted to stay in extended care while I was in school but if it meant that I would have to give up the experience of living in the dorms I was willing to make my way without the extra assistance. I found a way around studying abroad by talking to other youth on my advisory board and talking to different resources of mine to find out if the information that I had been given was correct. It turns out that my state was willing to let me study abroad and still be in custody. With the Independent Living situation I looked up the laws and policies surrounding it in Missouri. Then brought this information to my caseworker who still told me that it was not a possibility. So I then elevated my concerns through my advisory board and the adults on it. I then was informed a few days later that it had been sent through the chain of command to my caseworker that I could in fact do Independent living in the dorms and that they needed to allow me to do this if it is what I wanted.
