I am a Therapeutic Foster Parent

slarms01's picture

My husband and I have been Therapeutic Foster Parents since January 1990 (25 years). We have to have 24 training hours per year. Your website seems an answer to prayer for training. I have taken one course already and taken the quiz with a score of 100. My only question is how do I get the certificate.

I am a foster parent in AZ

Anonymous's picture

I am a foster parent in AZ and love doing so but have found CPS not giving support to the families doing the work for the children. When faced with challenges I had to make therapy requests/suggestions then CPS pulled the child without notice or warning. Since then they have lied and won't allow "my" child to contact us. I have tried to seek an attorney but can't find one that has good information about foster parents rights, I am struggling with what are these people really in the business for; I thought it was to do the best for the child and support them in times of struggle.

I'm really not for sure if I want to become a foster parent, because you get attached to them and there can be problems too when having a foster kid living in the house.

I am currently a foster

JAM32's picture

I am currently a foster parent. I've been doing this for about a year. It's hard work, but I absolutely love seeing smiles on the kids faces when they are achieving their goals. It makes me happy when they know how they are bettering their lives by bettering themselves. God has given me the strength and ability to help these kids. I am blessed to have this gift. I plan on doing this for as long as I can. You might think that it will be hard to open your home and heart to these children, but once you do it, it's one of the greatest things in your life.

I've been a foster parent

JKtraining's picture

I've been a foster parent now for about a year. Our first children were very young. We had them for 7 months. It was hard to see them go home, but we knew that it was the best thing for them. We had helped them in so many ways. They thrived. We continue to pray for them, that they will continue to have a great life. We currently have a 15 year old girl. I think teeneagers are easier than babies. They can basically take care of themselves, however the attitude and fits can be interesting. But if you are calm and don't allow them to get under your skin, then it is easy to deal with. My husband and I really enjoy being foster parents. It's hard work, but really rewarding when you see them happy, healthy, and thriving. We have two young children of our own. I am unable to have more. So we are foster/adoptive parents. Someday when we have a child or children that are here for awhile and they come up for adoption we will adopt.

crlovelady's picture

I definitely want to be a foster mother one day. I want to first finish all of my University (I want a phD!), and then go ahead and be a foster mom. I was a teenage when I was in the system, so I'd like to be able to open up a room for teenagers in my future home, as well.

I am a 18 year old woman who has been in the system since I was 5 years old. I got to tell you its hard right. I am getting ready to go off to Seton Hill University in the fall. I graduate in June, 2010. When I get settled down and am happy with my life I want to adopted children. I have one of my own now. I got pregnant at age 15. My son had to get place with his father and grandmother. I know how it feels to feel like nobody cares or loves you. I want to help every foster child I possibly can.

I am 62 yrs old, have been taking care of children all my life..Some siblings @ some state children..my husband @ I love children, didn't have any of our own, but we LOVE ALL CHILDREN related or not.I just wish the WELFARE would really get down to business @ hurry up all the training that we have to do..WE have been there @ done that allready ,but still have to take classes again because it's been over 3 years sence we took them..TO me it takes a lot LOVE @ UNDERSTANDING to be a foster parent @ the fact that I come from a family of 13[brothers @ sisters] I think we will make a GREAT FOSTER PARENT. We do not care what race, creed,or color..They are all children @ in need of some one to care for them.Children are a gift from GOD @ are to be LOVE @ CARE FOR..It's sad when their own parents don't care or what ever the problem is..WE would like to give those children what they are missing in their life @ do the very best we can to see that they get a lot of LOVE @ tryto help them to grow up @ be a Happy child @ teach they that there are people out there that care about them..With GODS help WE know that we can provide that for them @ give them a place that they can call HOME @ FAMILY that cares

Anonymous's picture

I am a gay female so my whole experience with foster care is a whole different story.Im able to have children the natural way but it cost a pretty amount of money so not only will i have my own children but i will adopt. i know we("FOSTER"children)come from many rekigions and origins around the world but we are not treated like the nonfoster children so we develop conditions that stick with us. i never want to make anyone, anything, and especially any child this way, the way i was treated, ive learned to love the people around me stranger or not because you never know what lesson you will learn from just listening and being open to a life that your not promised.

I'm currently pregnant with my first child. I've told my fiance that I want one more biological child and then I want to foster or adopt. I plan on fostering or adopting the older children, because I went into foster care at 15 and wanted nothing more than to be adopted, but everyone just wanted the babies and younger children. I can't wait! I'm also going into Social Work at college for the same reasons.
