Group homes are often in the news. Most recently the Chronicle of Social change posted an article about how a new bill in CA targets group homes. You can read it here. The article focuses on a young girl whose group home staff were not trained well enough to handle her traumatic outbursts. These outbursts, of course were related to her experience in foster care. Their solution was to use the police as a means to control youth in the facility. This solution is one that happens quite often in group homes, and in other arenas such as school.

Many of us in foster care have experience in group homes. Some youth have had good experiences, while others have had bad experiences. This bill is one of many that have been proposed recently to improve group homes, but the question is what will work?

Do you have experiences in group homes? What worked well? What didn't work well?
