In a recent study conducted by the Williams institute of California, researchers found that 19% of LA county youth who were involved with the foster care system identified as LGBTQ. More alarming, was the mistreatment that many of them reported having received from their care placements because of their LGBTQ status. This research effort has been funded by the LGBT center in Los Angelos and seeks to evaluate and improve the conditions for LGBTQ youth involved in the child welfare system. The grant came as part of a federal permanency initiative and is being applauded for it's potential as an innovative preventive tool.
