2013 Outstanding Young Leader

Josue Castro

21 years old
Spent 6 years in Michigan's foster care system

For Josue, childhood was full of immense challenges. Born in Honduras, adopted at birth, soon after his adoptive family collapsed and he experienced horrible crimes against him and his family as a young boy. At age 14, Josue entered foster care in the U.S. had been placed in five different foster homes. Foster care, along with additional programs, provided important growth and support for him as he grew up in Michigan. Regular foster care evolved to supported independent living. Josue is now 21years old and is living on his own. Josue was a star athlete in high school. His passion for athletics gave him a wonderful avenue to develop leadership skills and reach out to others. He has coached soccer and currently is an assistant coach for his former high school football team. He exhibits a passion for giving back through his leadership on the Lutheran Social Services of Michigan's Youth Board. Josue graduated from high school and is looking into attending college with a focus on design. Experience can be a tough teacher, but Josue has taken his personal experiences and turned them into something exciting, to offer support and guidance to other foster kids.
