Geylen Martinez was born in Juarez, Mexico, and moved with her family back and forth between Mexico and Texas throughout the first seven years of her life. At seven Geylen entered the foster care system when she and her siblings were placed in kinship care with their maternal aunt. Geylen lived with her aunt until she was 17, and did not realize she was in foster care until the day her aunt decided she would no longer care for her. She and her younger sister were then placed in a foster home where there were 15 other people residing.

Geylen graduated high school in May of 2006 and left foster care in August 2006. Geylen is currently a full-time student at El Paso Community College. She is in her third year and intends to obtain an associate’s degree in Sign Language Interpretation. She plans to then transfer to a university and obtain a bachelor degree in social work. Geylen plans on becoming a Sign Language interpreter work with the deaf community and maximize upon her trilingual skills. She loves the idea of helping others to communicate, becoming a voice for those who otherwise would not be heard and empowering vulnerable individuals. Geylen would also like to continue to work in some capacity with youth in foster care. Geylen Martinez has natural leadership abilities which she used in both middle school and high school. Once Geylen aged out of foster care she transferred these abilities and her passion to help others particularly youth and alumni of foster care. Geylen’s favorite color is pink, and loves tacos; her favorite pastime is reading.
