Spent 6 years in California's foster care system

To say that John Devine is a game changer would be an understatement. As a rising senior at California State University, San Bernardino, John is majoring in Sociology with a focus in Gerontology and the Social Sciences. Starting graduate school in the fall of this year, John’s sights are set on completing a Masters’ Degree in Social Work and making a bigger impact by working with young adults as a social worker. By working tirelessly and displaying the principle of perseverance throughout his academic career, John has been on the Dean’s List and has received honor society recognition from the Order of Omega and National Society of Leadership.

As a former foster youth living in Southern California, John has used his experience and advocacy to mentor and support foster youth who are currently seeking a higher education. As a foster youth mentor within the EOP Foster Youth Program at California State University, San Bernardino, he works with current and former foster youth to help them transition into university life during their freshman and sophomore years of college. In addition to this, John is also a student representative within his community and provides insight on services that need improvement in order to heighten the success rates of foster youth that are pursuing higher education. In addition to the work that he does as a college student, John also works with FosterClub to advocate for former foster youth throughout the state of California as a youth ambassador by advocating for legislation that benefits foster youth, as well as meeting with state officials and administrators.
