Chantel Johnson
23 years old, California
2009 Outstanding Young Leader

Chantel was in the foster care system from the time she was 7 until she emancipated at the age of 18. While in care she was separated from her siblings, experienced multiple placements, and fell behind in school credits due to the many different schools attended. Despite many obstacles Chantel eventually earned her diploma from continuation school and was accepted into the Educational Opportunity Program at California State University, East Bay.

Chantel is now a graduate student at the University of Southern California and works as the Legislative and Policy Director for California Youth Connection, where she advocates on behalf of the more than 75,000 foster youth in the state’s child welfare system. Chantel is driven by both her own experience in the system and inspired by the stories of the youth she works with on a daily basis; she believes that change is necessary to ensure that less foster youth are ending up in the state corrections system and more are ending up in our college system.
