We need your help to ensure that young people who leave foster care have a safety net when things go wrong. Please make a pledge to help today.

Each year, approximately 20,000 young people age out of foster care. The vast majority of these young adults transition without the range of supports necessary for success. While many work hard to complete their education and maintain employment, often they are faced with unforeseen obstacles that threaten their fragile economic stability. Without permanent connections to supportive adults, young alumni of foster care struggle alone to manage crisis and challenges, for which most young adults would turn to parents for assistance.

Without having established other people to call family, Ryan tried to reconnect with his biological family after he left foster care. He ended up being injured by one of them, resulting in a trip to the Emergency Room. He missed work, and ended up losing his job and saddled with a pile of medical bills. Ryan was unable to pay his rent and was evicted from his apartment.

Andy aged out of foster care at age 18 after living in group homes and residential facilities most of his life. He joined the military, thinking it would provide an opportunity for training, paying for college and to find structure in his life after leaving foster care. But without the support of family, Andy spent the three days before heading to boot camp without enough money to pay for a meal or make a phone call to say goodbye to friends.

Natasha had beaten the odds as a foster youth and succeeded educationally. But Natasha’s foster home informed her that without financial support, she would need to find her own place to live starting the day after her high school graduation. Natasha found herself headed to college and homeless.

Donald found that his eyesight was worsening and that the glasses he “aged out” of foster care with no longer met his needs. A full-time college student without health insurance, he struggled to read his assignments with his out-dated prescription.

These stories are true, but the names have been changed to protect the identities of the young people. These are just a few of the stories shared by thousands of youth across the country who age out of the foster care system each year.
