When I first entered foster care it was at the end of the summer, I had spent the previous part of my summer that year traveling in Europe. The first actual summer I spent in care I was living in a transitional living apartment program (TLAP). I had my own apartment, but I lived about a half hour away from all of my friends, I got a job at a local restarant and basically worked through my entire summer. It was a very difficult thing for me because I was used to being with my friends, tanning, being free to do whatever I wanted, and I also traveled out of the country just about every summer, but I was unable to do that when I entered foster care. Not that having a job was a bad thing but the only reason I worked so much was because I was unable to do any of the other things that were normal for me. But now I'm 18 and I've spent four summers in foster care, every year the summer time got better and easier, and this year I'm in Seaside, Oregon and I'm an All-Star, for me thats an amazing transition. :)

I would have say that my first summer in foster care was hard. Most of my friends had moved away when I got put into care and not being with my sister enjoying the time spent in the sun was difficult. Overall I had made it the best and I was finally happy when I lived with my foster parents. I think that if you just try to have fun and trying not to think about the past and thinking about what could come of the future helped me the most when it came to having a good summer. I would also say that the holidays are more difficult than the summer because it seems like I dont have all the things I miss so much about the holidays, but just think of all the good moments you can have with your new family.

Hi Shawn! I hope you do end up having a good summer. I think everyone elses ideas are good ones, it's important to stay busy. I actually like the school year better than the summer because there is routine and structure, but I've learned to make my own during the summer by working and staying busy. I hope your foster parents can help you do that.

Hey Shawn. I transitioned out of care when I was 18. Summers for me were actually really easy as a foster child. My foster mom had actually put me into a Junior Cycling team that took up a majority of my time. I also worked a ton at a tennis club. So my advice to you would to either find a job or find something that you enjoy, for me it was cycling, and see if there are any of those clubs or organizations around you that you can participate in. I am sure you foster parent(s) would be more than happy to help you find something to do. Please keep me posted on how your summer is going! Thanks!
