What would you do to change the foster care system? What, specifically, needs to be fixed?

I would revoke the law that says any child in foster care must be in an adoptive plan. I just barely grandfathered out of this law, but was almost trapped by it anyway when I was living with my little sisters. It still applied to them, so I was almost adopted by an abusive family. Luckily a teacher from one of my little sisters schools reported marks on my little sister and I was removed from the home. My biggest issue with this MN policy, is that I feel as if older teens should have the right to other support options. I feel as if Im too old to be adopted and Creating a "forever family" at this age from strangers is unrealistic. However, in the same light there are not many options for supporting young teens transitioning out, so its iether be odopted or have no support. Luckily I was able to find a foster home thats willing to support me iether way, but what about other teens?

Hi Ricky,

I just wanted to take the time to reply and share some advice with you. I understand your having some problems being away, but just stay strong. I am 22 now and I must say it was very hard getting here. I never had much support when I was away. I was always crying, sleepless nites, a lot of anger, seclusion to others, hopelessness and I was just a total mess. I was always told I would never amount to anything and I can finally stand here today even in the midst of all the problems I still have and say i proved them wrong. I was nearing 19 when I first enetered the world on my own and its been a journey. I finally am in college and feeling better about myself. I dealt with the group homes, foster homes, residentials and multiple hospitilizations. I believe you can do it and I am here anytime if you need or want to talk. STAY STRONG MY FRIEND!!

Hi Ricky,
Wanted to give you a heads up that your last name and address was removed from the comment above. That way you can always vent anonymously on the site in a safe way.
I'm sorry to hear about all the things you've had to deal with. So glad to hear you're not giving up. In terms of help, I suggest you talk to your caseworker, or CASA if you have one.
Here's FosterClub's Texas page, that might have some more resources: http://states.fosterclub.com/texas

Foster Care needs a lot of work. I am a foster child and I know they tell to treat the children like their own. Well, they obviosly don't though I don't suppose we can blame them. For example, when they have children and grandchildren, they are ALWAYS treated better than you are. Also, the way in the system you tend to get treated like you're an infant until you're 21

Thanks for asking permission before using anyone's comments. I did want to let you know that you're welcome to use FosterClub material (non comments) anywhere on site for your report as long as you cite FosterClub. I'm not sure what direction you're going in your report - foster care is kind of a broad topic, but I suggest taking a look at the topics, foster care facts and the q+a sections for general information. I think you'll find some good resources there. Good luck!

hey my name is melissa. i am planning on becoming a social worker for foster kids. but unlike the people they got working now im actually goin to do things right and i am goin to try my hardest to fight for these children that dont have a say. i was a foster kid growing up and i plan on getting my revenge by showing that you cant fix a kid by constantly moving them and taking them away form their siblings. i would like all the help i can get. i plan on moving to the state with the worst foster care system and changing it. i know i wont be making alot of money but i really dont care. if anyone has advice or would like to just talk my email is [sorry - no e-mail addresses please. thanks- FC staff].
thanks for listening,
melissa
